Little things can make such a difference. I recognize that our thinking is a bit opposite to today’s economic trends. Today’s business environment seems to be all about cutting corners. There is story after story about how to put less labor, less materials, less money into every element of business. But I’m guessing there are very few companies, be they a restaurant, store or drycleaner, that have failed because they spent too much time, money and effort to make their clients happy.

Here’s another truism I believe in… that is costs a lot less to keep customers then it does to get new ones. Maybe your customers will never fully love you; maybe they will only remain loyal and share that loyalty with their friends and neighbors. I bet you’d settle for that, wouldn’t you?

                                     FALLING IN LOVE: A BUSINESS MODEL

As part of our company’s move to a new, bigger warehouse, we had to buy and install 6,000 feet of storage racks. We got the standard three quotes, all pretty much the same price, but one of the vendors (also named Rick) said something that stuck with me: “I’ll be there for you in case there’s a problem.”

Sure enough, we had a problem. Rick, who claimed to have some thirty years of experience, recommended a configuration that turned out to be completely unworkable.

Change. You can hate the thought of it or can’t wait for it. One thing for sure, though: change is as inevitable as death and taxes. So it’s how we adapt to or create change that determines how best we’re going to cope with it.

For the kid turning 16, knowing they can now get their driver’s license is a change they’d looked forward to forever. Yet that change in life creates angst for parents, worried about the risk of accident and the foreboding nature of their child’s growing independence.

There’s a drycleaner in my neighborhood that brags that, “The only greener way to care for your clothes is to use a rock and a stream.”

That drycleaner has no solar panels, uses florescent lighting (which remains fully lit 24 hours a day, though they are closed for ten of those hours), has no reusable or even biodegradable packaging, and is in fact a perc cleaner. Why do they advertise themselves as green? “Because consumers like green.”

Oh.

And why don’t they don’t incorporate any green initiatives into their plant operations? “We’ve run our business the same way for fifty years, we see no reason to change.”
